Once a week, Holden Village initiates a contemplative vespers service titled Prayer Around the Cross. In this service, simple chants are sung while community members and guests are welcome to light a candle in prayer. Our singers this week included the talented Emily Meyer and Eleanor Sherry...and our guests included the schools from our May Youth Program.

Prayer Around The Cross

[00:00:00] Intro: Welcome to the Holden Village Podcast. Holden is a community of education, programming, and worship located in the remote wilderness of the Cascade Mountains. These snapshots provide a glimpse into the learnings taking place in our community. Let's tune in to this week's highlight.

[00:00:23] Emily: Welcome to Prayer Around The Cross. Tonight we gather for quiet and for prayer. We recognize the blessing of this community. Each of you here tonight are a gift and you enrich us all with your presence. And a special welcome to our May Youth Weekend guests; we are so glad that you are here. During our service, the lights in the room will be dimmed, inviting the silence and stillness.

Our songs are relatively simple, and if they're unfamiliar to you, join in as you feel comfortable. We will first sing the words and then invite the community to join in song.

[00:00:58] Chant 1: Oh God We Call

Oh God we call

Oh God we call

From deep inside we yearn

From deep inside we yearn

From deep inside we yearn...for you

[00:02:18] Emily: How do arrive in this space tonight? Have you been traveling and find yourself weary? Did you have a long day of work? Did you enjoy a day off and find rest? Did you have a day full of sessions and activities? However you show up for this time tonight, you are welcome. You are welcome here to find prayer and peace surrounded by community. We pause and we honor our lives, our limitations, our longings, even our mortality.

A reading from Romans.

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good;

Love one another with brotherly affection; outdo one another in showing honor.

Never flag in zeal, be aglow with the Spirit, serve the Lord.

Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.

Contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.

Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.

Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; never be conceited.

Repay no one evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.

If possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all.

Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God; for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord."

No, "if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head."

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

[00:04:26] Chant 1: Oh God We Call

Oh God we call

Oh God we call

From deep inside we yearn

From deep inside we yearn

From deep inside we yearn...for you

[00:05:47] Eleanor:

Sara Teasdale

Peace flows into me
As the tide to the pool by the shore;
It is mine forevermore,
It ebbs not back like the sea.

I am the pool of blue
That worships the vivid sky;
My hopes were heaven-high,
They are all fulfilled in you.

Join me in the spirit of prayer. Gracious and loving God, you created us with care, filled us with the breath. We have the ability to do amazing things, to work hard, and to be. Yet, sometimes we get carried away and forget. May we always remember to rest and be renewed in you. May we live with grace and love.

[00:06:43] Chant 1: Oh God We Call

Oh God we call

Oh God we call

From deep inside we yearn

From deep inside we yearn

From deep inside we yearn...for you

[00:08:02] Eleanor: When the music begins again, as you feel drawn, come to the cross and pray. Wherever you find yourself on the journey of faith or discovery, we come to pray, to love and be loved, to pray for all those whose lives intersect with ours. We invite you as you feel called to light a candle in prayer. If you would like the support of the community, please go to one of the four bowls on the corners; we urge the community to gather in the laying of hands. If you wish to pray alone, please go to one of the boxes.

[00:08:33] Chant 2: Kyrie Eleison

Kyrie Eleison, Christe Eleison
Kyrie Eleison, Eleison Eleison

[00:10:23] Chant 3: Come and Fill your Hearts with your Peace

Come and fill your hearts with your peace,
You alone oh God are holy

Come and fill your hearts with your peace,
Hallelujah

[00:12:07] Chant 4: Peace, Be Still

Peace, be still
Peace, be still
The storm rages
Peace, be still

[00:13:36] Chant 5: Deep Peace

Deep peace of the running waves
Deep peace of the flowing air
Deep peace of the shining stars to you
Deep peace of the quiet earth

[00:15:30] Emily: God is present with us and continues to draw us towards one another. Let the hope and word of love be your guide this night. Amen.

[00:15:40] Eleanor: You are welcome to remain in silence to pray. When you leave, please do so quietly. Go now, filled with the peace of god.

[00:15:49] Outro: Thanks for joining us. Be sure to view the links in the description for more information or visit our website to find out more about the village. We hope you will make a pilgrimage to Holden. Blessings and peace to you.
